People and Management (P&M), India’s premium HR magazine, held its first ever HR town hall session at the Metropolitan Hotel & Spa, New Delhi on November 9, 2016.

The day-long HR town hall, spread over 6 sessions, witnessed enthusiastic participation of professionals from across the country.

The First Session on ‘Technology Enhancing HR’s Performance’ was directed by Mr. D. P. Singh, Vice President and Head HR - India and South Asia, IBM. “Technology is becoming a key player. Every company is leveraging technology to enhance the business. It helps us with doing more with less,” he said.

The impact of technology on HR was discussed at length with panellists Mr. Saurabh Sharma, Practice Lead – University Relations and Employer Branding, Ericsson, Mr. Deepak Bharara , CHRO, Lanco Group and Mr. Rajeev Jain , President – North Zone, Genius Consultants Ltd sharing their inputs.

“Technovation is the single important factor that drives the organisation,” Mr. Deepak Bharara said.

The Second Session on ‘Corporate Wellness - Enhancing HR’s Performance’ was directed by Mr. Deepak Bharara, CHRO, Lanco Group. Panellists Mr. Chandan Nallal, HEAD – Corporate Engagement, Healthify Me, Mr. Arvind Usretay, Executive Director, People Advisory Services, EY and Mr. Anil Rathore, Group Head HR, Indiabulls Housing Finance Ltd highlighted the fact that wellness increases productivity and also helps improve the morale.

“Don’t look at your corporate wellness programme in isolation, look at it holistically,” said Mr. Arvind Usretay.

The Third Session on ‘HR as a Growth Partner for Learning and Development - A Plan to Transform Higher Education’ focussed on the role of Business schools and the need to understand the basic requirement.

The Session Head Dr. Jitendra Das, Director, Fore School of Management, along with panellists Mr. D.P. Singh, Vice President and Head HR - India and South Asia, IBM, Prof (Dr.) Dewakar Goel, General Manager (HR), Airports authority of India; HR Consultant ,International Civil Aviation Organisation(ICAO),Montreal, Cnada; Human Performance Technologist, International Air Transport Association (IATA), Geneva, Switzerland; Ms. Binu John, Head, HR Global shared Services Centre, New Delhi , GF HR GLOBAL OPERATIONS, Ericsson strongly suggested the need to ‘encourage & intensify’ industrial interface.

The deliberations brought to the fore the need to bring a long-term strategy to bridge the gap between industrial skills and graduate skills.

The Fifth Session on ‘Succession Plan - An Essential Element’ was chaired by Mr. Pankaj Dhingra - CHRO, SITI Network Limited, Zee Networks. Reverse Succession Planning was the talking point with several references to the current TATA Sons-Cyrus Mistry controversy.

Panellists Mr. Akshat Dhingra, AGM-HR, Pawan Hans Ltd, Mr. Prashant P. Srivastava - VP-HR, Admin & CSR, Green lam Industries Limited, Ms. Samriti Malhotra, Associate Vice President - Global HRD, Denave underscored the need to know when to stop, and let the bench strength and talent in the pipeline come in.

The event concluded with the Sixth and final session on ‘Building and sustaining a Workforce Culture’. Mr. Pankaj Dhingra, CHRO, SITI Network Limited, Zee Networks directed the session. Panellists Mr. Ajay Bhatia, Executive Coach & Principal, HR Consultant, at People Bridges, Mr. Jayanth Selvappullai, Vice President - HR, Brillio and Ms. Vasudhara Srivastava, VP-HR, Quatrro Global Solutions concluded that culture may vary from place to place/organisation to organisation, but the culture language remains the same.

“Culture is what defines a particular decision at that moment when employee has nobody to refer to. Employees are the key assets of any organisation,” said Vasudhara Srivastava.
